The Roswell Geological Society (RGS) was formed in 1950 by geologists, landmen, and oil operators active in the Permian Basin and West Texas.

The Society has actively participated in and initiated field trips, technical conferences, 

and produced significant publications related to the geology of the Permian Basin and southeastern

 New Mexico. The Society has, and does, fund university scholarships for earth science and petroleum engineering students.
